I knew the day would arrive when my double life would be exposed, but I had no idea it would arrive with such a large audience. Time to fess up.
Well, in a minute. Let's talk about some upcoming music first. Tomorrow night we've the long-awaited Marco Pandolfini, straight from Italy, joining Dan Treanor. Mr. Pandolfini has a solid rep on harp, so a lot of us have been excitedly talking about this show for a couple of weeks.
Maynard Mills is back Friday night, and he brings the old school with him, with some concrete blues guitar and great vocals. I had to miss them the last time, but hopefully the universe will cooperate this time…PLEASE! Saturday night Teresa Lynne is back after a triumphant appearance at the Obama Benefit this past Monday night. I can't believe I get to see her twice in one week! I'm lucky that way, I guess.
Next Thursday night is Glass Ceiling's inaugural gig at the Outlook, and I booked this and am extremely excited about bringing them to our fabulous home of the blues, and I hope a lot of you can come out and welcome them to the family. Three fabulous rocking chicks! Gretchen, Jill, Jodie, and I need some new house sisters, and these three will do just great.
Ok, back to my double life. When I started working with Dan about a year and a half ago, I was living this, well, other life. Don't get me wrong, I still live that life, it's just that now I have a lot more juggling and people to manage. Fortunately, my double life is not the secretive sort, so I don't have to cover my tracks or fabricate alibis. I just have to juggle.
For a quick description of my other life, the one about which most of you know nothing, it involves a lot of kids, since all of my friends were kind enough to have children so I didn't have to (same goes for pets). We have Mason and his sister Baeli, brothers Elijah and Sage, Billy and little bro Elliot, Rhode and Carmella, Josh and Zoe, and then all of their friends. I've done more than my share of babysitting. And pet sitting. I'm a very good "Aunt Honey."
Ok, so Diana Caile, the photographer whose idea it was to hold the VERY SUCCESSFUL Red, White and Blues for Obama fund-raiser, is the mother of Billy and Elliot, and the one who sought my assistance on the entertainment end of things (and I then sought out Jill's assistance, because I'm smart and know how to delegate: well, in the case of Jill, one must merely mention the tasks at hand and she takes over, no delegating necessary). For those of you who missed the evening, it was tremendous! But back to the matter at hand.
You see, Diana is part of my original "extended family" here in Boulder, my other life, and as such, because this was her first big photography exhibit, I knew that all and sundry within and beyond our close circle of friends would be there. Meaning they were all getting ready to meet Honey Bee for the first time. And, I was to be seen backstage with children calling for me, hugging etc., for the first time in front of my blues people. I'm sure some were confused. More so the musicians than the children, unsurprisingly.
So, when Jill and I took the stage to open the show, I heard more than few gasps from people not expecting to see me in that role. I think I handled that challenge well. After the Jack Hadley Band's set, Jill and I retook the stage after a wardrobe change. Jill looked resplendent in an ivory gown and gloves, and I looked like an idiot in a yellow and black dress with bee wings on my back (my antenna is being repaired). The dress also came with a seriously plunging neckline…and all the kids were there. I'm sure I'll be hearing about that, but I think the wings did a lot to distract them.
So, now everyone knows about everyone else, and I can stop the juggling. On Tuesdays, I can be found with Mason and Baeli for our Tostada Tuesday weekly date (which actually was suspended for the summer as I was buried in other responsibilities, but will resume as soon as they get back from visiting my mother in Italy); on most Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays I can be found at the Outlook in the evening. So, I would like to say to both my "families," if you want me, you know where to find me. My juggling days are over!
Before I conclude this week, here is what Chick had to say about Monday's successful event:
Honey Bee,
You guys did a great job on the Red, White & Blues for Obama last night. Man, what a great crowd! Everyone, especially the musicians, did an awesome job. It's amazing the way the Blues lovers (fans AND musicians) are always ready to show their support, whether it's a benefit for a musician or family in need, or in this case, an ENTIRE country in need. The blues community has always showed a lot of heart, and this time they showed that they give a damn about making the world a better place. Obama in 2008!
We had to leave around 10 and missed the last couple sets, but jeezus the entertainment was outstanding. Special thanks to Dan Treanor, The Delta Sonics (and Aiden "Sonny Boy" Boa), Mojambus, Teresa Lynne, Ken Saydak, Gretchen Troop, Delores Scott, Jack Hadley, Johnny O, the list is long, and I forgot someone I'm sure.
Anyway, here's a huge "well done" to Broads on Blues, Honey Bee and Jill Watkins, you both did and AWESOME FREAKING JOB!!!!!!!!!!!
We'll be up to the Outlook Thursday; I'm looking forward to seeing Treanor, Richard Ray Farrell and Marco Pandolfi. Really anxious to see Pandolfi, I mean how often to get a chance to see a fellow Italian bluesman, lol! The guy plays a mean harp. Planning to be back Saturday as well to catch Teresa Lynne who we really like. Glad that you got her back up here to the Outlook!!! - Chick
Thank you, Chick. It was a great night, and the event raised approximately $50,000 with the matching grant bringing the total to $100,000. Not a bad night for Senator Obama and the dedicated, determined people involved, all doing whatever necessary to insure change. Thank you, Diana, for including me in this and for trusting that I know what I'm doing . You idiot! And an enormous and very grateful "thank you" to the 30+ musicians who turned up and turned on for this event. We not only raised a lot of money, we informed a large new audience on what the blues is really about.

MEMO TO DAN
Dear Dan:
I'm not sure if this is still confidential, but I was hoping to discuss the First Annual No Boat Blues Cruise, January 17th and 18th, 2009, that you're hosting. I received the flyer and music schedule, and though lovely, none of my fiancés are on the line up. I'm sure this was merely an oversight, so to simplify things for you, here is my current fiancé list, in no particular order, as near as I can remember (Jill's working on the Honey Bee Fiancé Flow Chart, but it's still a work in progress):
Lyle Lovett Jason Ricci Buck Weed Tommy Castro Chubby Carrier Tommy Shannon John Németh Sean Kellerman Willie Panker Ron Thompson Bryan Lee Zac Harmon Larry Garner Earl Sally Kelly Richie (yeah, that's right!)
Let me know which of these you'll be contacting so I don't overlap anyone (that could be so awkward).
Indecisively yours, Honeybee
Dear Honey:
What a great line up. Of course the idea was to keep the price down for the guests. I’m sure if everyone wants to kick in another $1,000 or so, we could make this happen
