HAPPY HONEY HUGGED THE MONTH
You’d have to be a Lit major to understand that title (tee-shirt to the first one to catch the source from which I am paraphrasing). Moving on. What a month! It opened with Jill and me filming our first “Broads on Blues” show, then we had some great out-of-towners, followed by a little 12-hour festival in Greeley. All that and I just want more (I’m spoiled and don’t like to hear “enough;” nor should I). Good thing the month has plenty left to offer. Since I had other pressing issues last week and couldn’t articulate a Blues Letter ( @#$%&@$ raccoons!), I might go on a bit this week (I know what you’re thinking and you can just shut up!). Gretchen Troop Band’s Thursday night performance two weeks ago represented their usual wonderfulness, yawn. Kidding. Though always wonderful, each performance has its own personality, woven and influenced by all four of them. Without prior knowledge, an audience member would never entertain the notion of this band as newly-formed. They are too tight for that consideration. And for ten bucks, you can have that superb cohesiveness on the band’s first, self-titled CD, with Jodie Woodward (bass), Randall Dubis (guitar), and JD Townsend (drums) joining Gretchen on vocals (Brian Fitzgerald guests on keys). With only two originals, Gretchen still manages to convey a sophisticated knack for songwriting with “Dangers” (a painfully spot-on song co-written with Jack Hadley), and “Soul Conversation.” However, you might want to order it from her site; she tends to bring only two or three copies with her to their gigs (kidding, Gretchen). The following Thursday the Outlook hosted the maiden voyage of the Good Ship Delores Scott, and our addiction to her is now absolute and ongoing. I’ll get back to her. We also recently had my beloved Delta Sonics, and we had a lot of fun, with dancers on the floor from the moment the band joined Al (after he performed a couple solos on guitar, then a duo with Jerry Deall on harp). With non-stop dancing going on, Al decided he needed a diva fix. He called a certain Blues Broad up for a couple of sultry, sexy, NC17 numbers. Jill Watkins delivered and brought the room to a frenzy. She has a tendency to do that.

(continued from 1st column)
Back to Delores, my new best friend. Last Thursday we saw the first of hopefully countless whirlwind performances from the force of nature that is Delores Scott. She’s everywhere! At a statuesque 5’2” (that’s statuesque in my world, so again, shut up!), Ms. Scott is a fully-packed powerhouse of talent and moves. And grooves. Her voice is bigger than several of her put together, and she sashays it around the room with such casual elegance that one can’t help but be transfixed, not to mention transformed. She knocked ‘em out in Greeley, too. Then last night she joined the blues jam with Jack Hadley, Dan Treanor, Randall Dubis, Jodie Woodward, and a bunch of others. She thrilled the crowd again, and got down and dirty with “Little Red Rooster.” Down and dirty with her own lyrical adaptations sending us into peals of laughter (even Jodie had a hard time holding it together). We LOVE you, Delores! You have a second home. And a pair of my Italian stockings. More of those when you come back. Friday night was another Kelly Richey throw-down. She mesmerizes, electrifies, and stirs everyone in audible range. She is, simply put, a blazing guitarist, and we will give you plenty of notice before her next trip to town. Reservations suggested. We have Mojambus returning this Friday, but with a new guy on harp/vocals, AC. I saw them in Greeley, and although it may be a little tough to imagine them without Jason Downing, AC holds his own. Join us in welcoming him to his first Mojambus Outlook gig. Next week. Oh. My. God. Wednesday night, Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin, Prodigal Son of the Outlook, will be performing a duo with Al Chesis, something I have seen, but has not been repeated at the Outlook until now. It’s a different vibe, more intimate, and when Bob gets to story-telling, one is reminded of the legends and luminaries who have informed his career. Damn! He’s played with everyone. He also has made a minor modification to my Teresa Lynne-bestowed Blues Name, “The Blues Bee.” He reminded me that one of Muddy’s best known songs is a little tune called “Honey Bee.” Do I really have to continue, or are you all smart enough to see where this is going? I’m going to go with “smart enough.” And with that, I must assume I will see you next Wednesday. Come early. Then there’s the following evening with a band I kind of like. Kind of obsessively! Jason Ricci and New Blood! I am very, veryhappy when these guys hit town, counting the days, hours, minutes. Please remember if you want a seat, arrive early. I’m not the only one wound up about them. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a small tent city erected in the back parking lot that morning. Then there’s Friday Night with Larry Garner! Can you believe what a week it’s going to be. Eat well, sleep well, avoid arguments, and nap as often as possible between now and then. I’m cross training as you read this. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go register my new Blues Name.
Honey Bee Sepeda MEMO TO DAN Dearest Dan: Now that I have been bestowed yet another Blues Name, and by a legend no less, I would like to have the table under the chalkboard designated permanently mine. However, my royal ass would like a chair more suited to my stature. Thank you.
Royally Yours,
Honey Bee
Dear Honey Pot,
Whatever!
Diplomatically yours, The Ambassador's Attaché
