OCTOBER SURPRISE
Wow, did we all have a tremendous surprise last night at the Delta Sonics’ jam! After a great opening set from the DS with Nic Clarke sitting in, we welcomed Iowa’s Avey Brothers, a power trio not to be missed! I’m reposting Chick’s review of them for those of you who had to miss them (a mistake I won’t let you make again):
I saw the Avey Brothers in Memphis in 2010, and they immediately became a favorite of mine. 2010 was the second time they were an IBC Finalist, and they have won numerous awards in Iowa competitions. The band is led by Chris Avey, a monster guitar player. Chris is the former lead guitarist and backing vocalist for blues icon, Big Pete Pearson, and he fuels the band with his stinging guitar attack and fiery vocals. One reviewer said, "vocals and guitar reminiscent of a younger more fiery Coco Montoya, mixed with a dash Tab Benoit." Another said, “This accomplished bluesman and his band are on the way up look for them at a festival near you.” Blues Monday monthly says, “one of our favorite bands from the Midwest, a must see.” Blues Blast Magazine says, "Blues with intensity and emotion...More energy than a power plant." They have a great sound, as a power trio that blends Cajun swamp with Blues, Rock and classic Chicago sounds. They are no strangers to the big stage; The Avey Brothers have played numerous festivals and have shared the stage and venues with top Blues artists such as Kenny Neal, Delbert Mclinton, Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials, Walter Trout, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Lonnie Brooks, and Big Pete Pearson. ~Chick Cavallero~
Thanks, Chick. I’m working on bringing them back out in January, and will announce the date as soon as we have it. These three, Chris, Mark, and Brian, are also great fun! I had been planning on leaving after their smokin’ hot set, but we started talking, and...well, I got home pretty late. Thanks for the fun time, guys! We hope to see you in January.

Tomorrow night the Clam Daddys are back! And they’re bringing our own Lionel Young along with them. I was at the Greeley Blues Jam this year (like, duh), and stood riveted in front of the stage for their entire set, which again included Lionel. They were one of my favorites of the day, so I’m really, really happy they’re finally back at the Outlook. I won’t let a couple of years go by again without booking them. I’m sure I’ll even secure a couple of future dates when I see them tomorrow. Be there, and remind me to schedule them (I might get so caught up in their music that I’ll forget...it happens).
Then Friday night, one of my all-time favorites (musician and person), Larry Garner returns after a year’s absence. We LOVE Larry, and for those of you who’ve yet to experience a night with him, I can assure you it will be LOVE for you too. We had initially put a $5 cover on the show, but Dan has generously lifted that. One thing’s for sure, there aren’t a lot of ways I can think of that would make for a better way to enjoy a Friday night. Great guitar, great vocals, and one damn fine storyteller! Damn fine.
Speaking of damn fine, Eddie Turner returns Saturday night! It’s been about year since I’ve seen him here too, as I had to miss his last gig. Well, actually, I saw him last month when he came to the jam after the IBC finals. He did a short set with Jasco, Billy Hoke, and Kim Stone, and they set fire to the bandstand. I said it before, but it bears repeating: What he and Kim Stone did during about a ten-minute solo volley was inspired, unbelievable, innovative, ingenious, imaginative, original, and I could go on, but I believe you’ve received my message. Ask anyone who was there, and it was packed, and I’m sure they’d say something similar.
This Sunday is the Robin Rogers Benefit Jam, and we’re starting early: 6:30. A lot of musicians are donating their time, and with any luck, I can persuade Kim and Eddie to join forces again. I’m working on it. I’ll be sending out a blast this Friday with a full list of participants, so stay tuned, and mark your calendars. Robin is home with hospice care because of an inoperable tumor on her liver. Her band is now unemployed, and her medical expenses are mounting. There is another big fund-raiser for her in North Carolina that day, and our own Prodigal Son, Steady Rollin’ is one of the headliners. I might be able to set up a phone call from Bob during the event to let us know how things are going at their benefit. That could be fun...
Next Tuesday is the Gretchen Troop jam, and don’t forget, some of our fondest musical memories are born at jams. We just never know who’s going to show up.
I leave you with the reminder to vote for the Sean Costello Fund for Bi Polar Research. Vote every day! Go Here
