CATCH 22 TURNS THE
BIG 30!
Fiancee #22, Mr. Jeremy Vasquez of My Beloved Delta Sonics, turns 30 this Saturday, and guess where they’re playing! That’s right! We’re having one hell of a birthday bash for Jeremy, with all kinds of surprises, so don’t miss it! There also might be spanking. I’m just saying.
I’m getting ahead of myself. Tonight is Blue Mojo’s maiden voyage with us, and they’re a young Blues band out of Denver. Several months ago, Shana, vocals, emailed a query about a gig at the Outlook. I told her, as I have told many local bands we’ve not booked before, that the best way is to gather the band and join one of our jams. Blue Mojo not only all got together on a Sunday night to sign up for one of Mark and Lionel’s jams, but they brought a crowd! They performed three songs, and then the crowd demanded a fourth. They are fun and dedicated young musicians, and brought a wonderful energy with them. Even Lionel and Mark agreed I should book them, and we all know what snobs they are! Kidding. Sort of.
Tomorrow our lovable Mojomama comes back for yet another party. I don’t know why it is, but the entire place turns into one big family reunion every time Mojomama plays. Granted, the last time was Jessica’s 39th birthday, and yes, I’ve already booked them for her 40th next year (now THAT”S going to be a party), but we never seem to need an excuse. Jess’ mother, Arlene, was once one of the camera operators for Broads on Blues, so we really are a big family. Mojomama also played the bandstand this past weekend at the Boulder Creek Festival (or more commonly known in my circle as The Corn Dog Fest. I just love corn dogs, but have to limit my consumption to festival weekends only), and they were quite the crowd pleaser. A certain redhead and I flirted mercilessly with Paul Rogalski, you know, Jess’ badass, bass-playing husband. We can’t help ourselves. Jess understands. I think. A certain “Trooper” was there too, and she did her share of flirting, I assure you.
This Family Reunion, however, will open in true family style: Paul and Jess’ foster daughter, Jackie, and her band will open at 6:45 for a 20-minute set, followed by another of Mojo’s Music Academy students, Tara, who will perform a duo for 30 minutes. These talented “kids” have graced our stage before, to much applause and enthusiasm, so come early and let’s give the next generation our encouragement.

Back to Saturday. I hope a lot of you come out to celebrate My Jeremy’s birthday. Just remember the one word I have for you: Spankings.
Next Wednesday, June 9, Tinsley Ellis is back! He sells out, so if you haven’t purchased your ticket yet, you might want to call or pick some up this weekend.
The Jambalaya Jam is still rolling steady, and the official announcement from the organization that will be handling the money end of things is due any day. More and more musicians are signing up to donate songs to the benefit CD as well. I’m starting to think it might end up being a double...
We’d like the thank the Insomniacs for their free, impromptu performance last night. The last minute decision hindered our getting the word out en masse, so we were a small crowd, but we were a happy one. They played for us as if we numbered in the thousands. We cheered as if we were a bigger crowd! Thanks guys, it was wonderful! We miss you already.

Unabashed and impassioned plea to our readers:
We are trying to get the great Atlanta blues giant Bill Sheffield out here to Colorado later this year and we need to get him booked for a couple of gigs.
So if anyone knows of a possible (additional) venue for Bill in late Sept or early Oct, please contact Honey.
